I’m a student events promoter!

I’ve recently been given a job as a rep/promoter for a company called Lowercase Events (Bournemouth) now that I have relocated for University. I’m really excited about this as it gives me the chance to meet new people and get involved with events, whilst earning a little bit of cash on the side.

I will be selling physical tickets to students for specific events and also repping online. Currently, there are four events I’m repping:

Times Red – Not Listening

I’ve been a fan of Times Red ever since they stepped out onto the stage for their X Factor audition,  and not just because they look good (below). As well as vocalists and musicians, Staz Nair, Scott Ritchie and Luke White are all songwriters, giving Times Red’s songs’ a unique style.

Their long-awaited debut single Not Listening (due out on 4th August) is an up-beat, pop song, great for the summertime. I love the track’s laid-back vibe created by the group’s acoustic sound. From being the ‘underdogs’ on the X Factor, the boys have come back proving that now the time is right for Times Red.

Give Not Listening a listen and watch the official video below – don’t forget to tweet the boys @times_red, and @hdmusicpromouk your thoughts on it!

Sam Callahan – Crazy

Today, Sam Callahan releases his second single, Crazy. After embarking on a Crazy Campaign in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust during May and June, his follow-up single to Runaway Train is well worth downloading. Sam’s campaign saw him eat a 26 inch pizza, bungee jump, sky dive and even skinny dip in Chelmsfordat 4am, plus many other stunts that very few other 19-year-olds would be prepared to do.crazy-cd-cover

The song itself is energetic and catchy and definitely a song for Summer. Be sure to download Crazy (and the remix) on iTunes (click here) which are both priced at only 79p each. To give a donation to Sam’s charity campaign page, click here.

Check out the official video for Crazy below:

With such a selfless attitude, we are sure to see Sam Callahan do big things in the future and hope the single is a huge success. Nice work Sam and congratulations on raising over £1,350 already!

Introducing… Kingsland

Kingsland are a new, fresh boyband from London. I’m a big fan of boybands but that also means I’m fully aware of how many ‘clones’ we’re seeing emerge. I’m pleased to announce, however, Jay, Connor, Thompson, Matt and Josh bring a unique vibe to the UK’s music scene. What I love so much is that Kingsland embraces each member’s personality and voice, allowing their individualities to shine on solos (and their dancing!). Not just a bunch of pretty faces, Kingsland are already proving to be popular, with over 165,000 Youtube hits and 13,000 Twitter followers – and all since only November 2012. These boys are definitely one to watch in 2013 and beyond. In their own words: #TheKingsAreComing!

Capital FM Summertime Ball 09/06/13 REVIEW

On Sunday 9th June 2013, the annual Capital FM Summertime Ball took place at Wembley Stadium. The handsome and incredibly talented Justin Timberlake was the ‘host with the most’ introducing some of the hottest music acts in Britain at the moment, as well as doing his own slick acoustic impromptu set.

SAM_0833

Starting at 4pm and lasting more than six hours long, the Ball surpassed it’s scheduled finishing time of 9.30, allowing more than twenty current pop artists take to the stage. With the ‘Breakers’ section, newcomers such as X Factor’s James Arthur, Britain’s Got Talent’s Loveable Rogues and Charlie Brown were given an enormous platform and crowd to perform to. More established acts such as cheeky Essex boy Olly Murs, Jessie J, Taylor Swift and Robbie Williams – described amusingly by Justin as his ‘brother from another mother from another brother’ – were given longer sets.

Despite a lack of pace at times, the show was excellent with Psy’s performance of his viral ‘Gangnam Style’ to a sold out Wembley crowd of 80,000 a definite highlight. The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes also made a surprise return to the band, singing a powerful solo during ‘I Found You’, much to the delight of the fans.

The Capital FM Summertime Ball takes place every July and the Jingle Bell Ball every December. Check out http://www.capitalfm.com for all the latest news on the Ball

S.U.B. – Seriously Underrated Bands

Everyday, we see bands plug their music and try to increase their Twitter followers, Facebook ‘likes’, YouTube subscribers and viewers etc in an attempt to reach a wider audience. After a putting in a lot of money, time and effort in recording songs and going on tour, this comes as no surprise. Here’s just three of my current favourite bands that I believe are seriously underrated. If you have a moment, check them out!

StakeOut – I saw StakeOut last year, completely by chance, supporting another band on tour and have been a fan ever since. Most of the songs have pop/rock/punk sound to them but ‘The Outcome of Saying Goodbye’ on their recently-released ‘Live It Up’ EP, is – without sounding too soppy – beautiful (try not to cry when you listen!). Definitely check out StakeOut’s YoutubeTwitter and Facebook and grab some tickets to their ‘Young and Fearless’ UK headline tour this summer at http://www.stakeoutofficial.co.uk

My Forever – This is a band you definitely do not want to miss. My Forever, based in York, are a rock/pop band with anthemic tunes that make you want to sing at the top of your voice (although that’s definitely not advised if you have angry neighbours). The four-piece are also going out on tour this Summer so be sure to catch them at a date if you can. Tickets and merchandise can be bought from www.myforever.bigcartel.com. Find them on social networking sites: Facebook,Twitter and Youtube

Disclosure  You’re probably thinking ‘Disclosure aren’t underrated’ but that’s where you’re wrong! I’m referring to the Oxford pop/rock band and not the brothers from Surrey! This Disclosure – very different – are fronted by Tiff, who has an incredibly powerful voice btw (that means ‘by the way’ if you were born yesterday). They sound similar to Paramore but they definitely don’t stand in their shadow. For a start, there’s 5 of them and they’re British… that’s at least two differences, right?! Check out Disclosure’s single ‘What A Waste of Time’ on iTunes and grab tickets to their first headline tour this Summer www.disclosuretickets.com. Find them on Facebook,Twitter and Youtube too!

An Interview with boyband Riverside

Image

Riverside (Chris Bedwell)

Riverside is an Essex-based boyband relatively new to the music scene, having only formed earlier on in 2013. The band is Jack, Tommy and Jake (and Will, who was added to the line-up in June 2013). Having racked up almost 15,000 Youtube views, covering artists such as One Direction and Justin Bieber, and with over 5,500 Twitter followers, the boys are steadily building a dedicated fanbase of ‘Rivlets’. Having done an X Factor audition, more fame and fans are likely to be on the horizon for Riverside very soon.
As HD Music Promotion’s first ever ‘Artist of the Week’, it only made sense to get the boys involved in a little ‘Q & A’. Here’s what HD asked…
How would you sum up Riverside in 3 sentences? A group of young lads from Essex, on the journey to achieving our dreams, by doing what we love which is music, with the support of a strong team and our amazing fanbase the Rivlets.
What do you hope to have achieved in 5 years’ time? To be be recognised on a worldwide scale and we hope to reach out to as many people in the world by doing what we love and by making people happy.
However, a ‘Q & A’ is nothing without fan questions and HD got an incredible response on Twitter with so many being sent in! Read on to see if the boys answered your question below!
Who are your role models/inspirations? @CarolynWarzone Tommy’s inspiration is Ed Sheeran, Jack’s inspiration is Justin Bieber, Jake’s inspiration is Mac Miller.
Who would you most like to follow you on Twitter? (Individual or Group) @jemmalouisen Jake’s is Emma Roberts, Jack’s is Kendall Jenner, Tommy’s is Ed Sheeran. As a group we appreciate every one of our followers.
If there were to be a movie about Riverside, who would you like to play you? @TommyTsBand Jake would want Channing Tatum, Tommy would want Justin Bieber, Jack would want Zac Efron.
What inspirational quote do you live by? @TommyMillersGirl “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get” – Forrest Gump’s Mum.
Who has the smelliest feet? @OliviaT_ Tyrone our manager haha.
Would you rather have legs for arms or arms for legs? @chantellealanax Arms for legs because arms are stronger.
What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done? @EllisFoord Jack hitting a bum note on his first ever recording session haha!
Would you rather live in space or under the sea? @shona_District3 In space, so we could watch the world go by!
Alpaca, sloth, llama – who would be who and why? @SGrivlets Jacks an Alpaca, Jakes a sloth and Tommys a Llama. Dunno why that’s just pretty cool haha!

(NB: This interview was carried out in early May 2013 when the band had three members: Jack, Tommy and Jake)

Unsigned – Raising your online profile

Social networking sites are extremely important in establishing a strong following from fans as well as interacting with music promoters, record labels, radio stations & DJs and events organisers.

It is open to debate as to which sites are the most important for an artist to regularly update but Facebook, Twitter and Youtube are a good place to start.

Youtube – arguably the best site for budding musicians. Use Youtube correctly and it will work wonders for you. Acoustic covers with a good accompanying video are an excellent way of building up views, likes and subscribers. You can also post teasers, full songs, official videos, blogs, video diaries, live performances – whatever will create a buzz around you and your music. Remember not to upload a few videos and then leave it for 6 months before adding anything new – people won’t just assume you’re working on new material so let them know if this is the case.

Facebook – creating a public page for your band gives you a great platform for posting videos, events, new music, announcements, photos, ticket links etc. Start by getting your friends and family to ‘like’ and ‘share’ the page, as well as posting the link on other networking sites you use. Run competitions encouraging fans to get their friends to ‘like’ the page too and perhaps give the incentive of free tickets or rare merchandise. Creating a personal Facebook specifically for accepting fans is also an excellent way of informally interacting and promoting your music. However, if you are going to do this, do not then constantly create band-related events and invite everyone in your friends list. Too many notifications is very annoying!

Twitter – without spamming, send your latest Youtube clip to people who follow bands who influence you or are similar to you/your band. Don’t just expect followers to grow – follow any music-related accounts who may promote you and politely ask to be ‘retweeted’. Also think about following general music fans – many people will follow back if they’re attracted by your video, bio and picture. Make sure it is clear who you are as well as where you are based, your genre/style of music and any relevant links.

MySpace – although it appears very few people use the site nowadays, having a MySpace account that has your gigs listed and music posted on, is a great help to music moguls. As it was created especially for artists to share music on, they will appreciate it if you have taken the time to set up a MySpace page for them to look at.

Soundcloud – quite simply, use Soundcloud to upload audio clips of songs and send them via Twitter and/or email to as many radio stations and promoters as possible. If they have immediate and easy access to your music, they are far more likely to consider playing it.

Instagram – you may not consider Instagram especially important but given that it is an app specifically designed for communicating photos you have taken in your day-to-day life, it can be very good. It allows fans to see what you are up to – whether music-related or not – and this will make them feel more involved with you/the band’s life.

Of course, there are many more social networking sites that may be useful but use these (particularly the first three) well and you have a good basis for promoting your music to a diverse range of people.

If you have any comments regarding the blog or suggestions for future articles, it would be great to hear them.
